Challenge B – Substantive Post #1

Study Tips

This video outlines three helpful tips for studying effectively. The first is to use flashcards to quiz yourself as it allows you to actively retrieve and recall information. The second is to combine multiple subjects in one study deck, allowing for better memory retention. The third technique involves spacing out your review sessions to allow for rest in between and ensure you are not leaving studying/cramming until the day before the test.

This video falls under the category of The Explainer Video by using narration on top of visuals. Techniques to help manage intrinsic load such as segmenting and pretraining are seen in the video. It is broken down into 5 different organized sections: the introduction, how the brain stores information, test yourself with flashcards, mix the deck, and spacing, allowing the audience to re-visit a specific section if needed. The three study tips also build on one another with the first one being the foundation and the others adding complexity.

Extraneous cognitive load in the video are limited. The content is clear, focused on the topic and leaves out unnecessary information. The visuals act as a helpful aid rather than being seen as a distraction or redundant. The signaling principle is also seen at the start of each section in the video where they outline how, what and when.

I think this is a useful and engaging video that is relevant to many individuals. It is also a good demonstration on how multimedia learning theories are used in short educational videos.
